The Greater Antioch Baptist Church History

A journey of faith in the heart of Old South Baton Rouge.

And When the Day of Pentecost had come they were all together in one place.

-Act 2:1

"We are the little church with the big heart, We enter to worship and exit to serve."

In 1916 the first church was organized under the leadership of the late Rev. Robert D. West, Sr., located at 2139 Nebraska Street, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 70802. The first church was built where the current church parking lot is today.

There was a fire in the early 1930's which destroyed the first church. Due to the fire, temporary church services were held on Highland Road near Terrace Street.

In order to build another church, the Pastor and members held fundraisers. Items sold were, popcorn balls, pecan candy, hot dogs, cold drinks, and chicken dinners. Through the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit, the funds for the church were finally raised.

May, 1927, another church was built under the leadership of Rev. Robert D. West, Sr. Again, this church also stood on what today is the current church parking lot. This building was used for church worship until the condition of the building became unrepairable.

August 1962, Rev. Robert D. West, Jr, and Sis. Mildred West donated their family property to build the new church building. This property was chartered and the amendment of the Incorporation was issued on December 11, 1962.

On January 18, 1986, Antioch Baptist Church, as the church stands today was constructed. After rebuilding the church, and because the name "Antioch Baptist Church" was so common in this area, the church name was changed to "The Greater Antioch Baptist Church". In 1986 the cost of building the current church was $88, 627.00 (Eighty-eight thousand, six hundred twenty-seven dollars)

The Greater Antioch Baptist Church had several Pastors: first, Rev. Robert D. West, Sr., under his leadership many great things happened. The second Pastor of Greater Antioch Baptist Church was the son of previous Pastor, Rev. Robert D. West, Jr. Pastor Robert D. West, Jr. served as Pastor at Greater Antioch Baptist Church until his death in 1990. After his death several ministers served on an interim basis such as; Rev. Johnny Hayes, and Rev. Gibson. The next full time Pastor of Greater Antioch Baptist Church was Rev. Ronald T. Williams. He served as Pastor from 1990 until 1993.

In July of 1994, Dr. Rev. Levert Kemp, Sr. became the current Pastor of Greater Antioch Baptist Church. Under Dr. Kemp's leadership many great and mighty things have taken place. We thank God for Dr. Kemp's visionary leadership.

In November of 1998 and January 1999 Greater Antioch Baptist Church two parcels of land adjacent to the church. Dr. Kemp was given a vision from God to construct an Education Center on this property. In September 1999 a groundbreaking ceremony was held. With the help of so many God-sent people, we were blessed to have completed our Educational Center. The building consists of our Pastor's Study, several classrooms, Secretary's Office, a Conference Room, and the Fellowship Hall. In April 2004, the sanctuary was renovated and modernized with new flooring, new pews, and pulpit furniture and decorations. In 2011, the church purchased two additional parcels of property north of the church for future expansion.

Because the Gospel of Jesus Christ has been taught and preached, the hearts of many persons have been touched and changed by the Holy Spirit. Many persons have confessed Jesus Christ as their Savior, and Dr. Kemp has baptized many in the name of Jesus Christ. Greater Antioch Baptist Church is poised to continue to thrive, grow, and spread the good message of Jesus Christ.
